Mirkwood was the great forest east ofthe Anduin in Wilderland.It was originally called Greenwoodthe Great until the shadow of Sauron fellover the woods. The forest became dark and filled with evil creatures, but thegreat Woodland Realm of the Elves endured. During the Warof the Ring, Legolas ofMirkwood gained renown as a member of the Fellowship, and after Sauron'sdownfall the forest was free of the shadow of evil once more.

Mirkwood was the largest forest inMiddle-earth in the Third Age. From north to south the forest coveredapproximately 425 miles. From east to west it was about 200 miles across at itswidest point. On the southeastern side of the forest was the EastBight, a great clearing that cut into the woods. At this point the distanceacross Mirkwood was the shortest - about 75 miles - and it was known as theNarrows of the Forest.

The ForestRiver flowed through the northern part of Mirkwood from the GreyMountains in the north to LongLake east of the forest. The EnchantedStream sprang from a source in the Mountains of Mirkwood and flowednorth to join the Forest River. Another stream,whose name is not known, flowed east from the mountains into the RiverRunning. The River Running passed through the easternmost edge of Mirkwoodfor a short distance.

Many animals lived in Mirkwood, includingblack squirrels and deer, some dark and some white. There were large black batsand dark-grey and black moths that were as big as a person's hand. Above theforest, black emperor butterflies lived in the treetops. Ordinary spiders alsolived in the treetops, while down below dwelled the huge and terrifying GreatSpiders who wove webs in the tree-branches and fed on warm blood.

In ancient times when the Elves began theirGreat Journey westward to the Undying Lands, some of the Elves were reluctantto cross the Misty Mountains and decided tosettle in the woods along the Anduin. These Elves were of the kindred calledthe Teleri, and those that remained in the woods came to be called SilvanElves, or Wood-Elves.

He may also havebeen trying to distance his realm from the realms of Lothlorien and Khazad-dum acrossthe Anduin. The Wood-Elves settled in the fir-covered mountains north ofthe OldForest Road. Their numbers increased and they roamed far and wide throughoutthe forest.

During the Warof the Last Alliance at the end of the Second Age, Oropher and his sonThranduil led a great army to fight Sauron. Many Elves of Greenwood died in thewar, for though they were courageous they were poorly equipped for battle andtheir forces remained independent of Gil-galad'ssupreme command. Oropher himself was slain during the assault on the gates ofMordor.

After Sauron's downfall, Thranduil returnedto Greenwoodwith only a third of his army. For the first millennium of the Third Age, theWood-Elves were at peace and their numbers grew again. During this time, theNorthmen who lived east of Greenwoodalso increased and some made settlements in the eaves of the forest. The Menfelled many trees to build their homes, creating the great clearing called the EastBight.

They movednortheast and built halls ina network of caves in the hills on the banks of the Forest River.A stream ran from the caves to join the ForestRiver and the Elves used it totransport goods to and from Long Lake and beyond.
