What on earth does“language”refer to in the scope of linguistics? Many linguistic books do not explain it clearly. According to Mr.Dai Weidong, language is a system of vocal symbols used for human communication. Moreover, speech appear before writing, the latter being just a medium of the former. To me, they are not on the same page. So, what's the meaning of appreciating literatury works,most of which are not record of speech, from the perspective of linguistics?
