Funeral Blues
W.H .Auden
Stop all the clocks, cut off the telephone,
Prevent the dog from barking with a juicy bone,
Silence the pianos and with muffled drum
Bring out the coffin, let the mourners come.
Let aerplanes circle moaning overhead
Scribbling on the sky the message He is Dead.
Put crepe bows round the white necks of the public doves,
Let the traffic policemen wear black cotton gloves.
He is my North, my South, my East and west,
My working week and my Sunday rest,
My noon, my midnight, my talk, my song;
I thought that love would last forever: I was wrong.
The stars are not wanted now; put out every one,
Pack up the moon and dismantle the sun,
Pour away the ocean and sweep up the woods;
For nothing now can ever come to any good.
An angel came back to heaven, with his one-month experience in this world. May be he has been tried of the endless battle for life; he just went back to the happiest place where he came from, leaving us to go though the pain.
Happiness and surprise he has brought to all of us. I cannot forget the moment when I heard that he came to this world. How excited and happy I was! I cannot forget the moment I saw him lying quietly and peacefully in the cradle. I cannot forget the first time he opened his little eyes and stared directly into mine. I cannot forget the first time I feed him the milk. I cannot forget that my uncle and I discussed to give him an English name, Henry, hoping that he can be as strong and smart as that great French football player. I cannot forget that I took a camera to take photos of him, thinking of when he grew up we would tell him his interesting story…
All of this has passed, only memory stays.
There was a time that I looked at him and wondered that what would he be when he is in my age.
But now, everything is over.
You haven’t heard of Peter Pan. But you are alike. So try to find Peter, and play with him. You won’t be lonely. You are a child that will never grow up now, and that is the dream for all the children alive.
Henry, I want you to know that we love you. You must be happy there. We want to see a happy and healthy child of you, living with great joy in the heaven. That’s a wonderful place without pain, without disease. So don’t be afraid. Be a brave boy.
But please don’t forget us. When you are missing home remember to come back to see us. The window of our heart is always waiting for your good news from your Neverland.
