I'm willing to bet my life savings on her
One woman has taken out her life savings to invest more than $500,000 on a virtual unknown to cut an album.
But Ms Nelly Poa, 44, sees star quality in 20-year-old unknown Chen Meixin.
Ms Poa, a veteran in the Chinese entertainment industry for more than 20 years, runs her own creative marketing and promotion services company.
Some of the personalities she has worked with include Hongkong singer Sally Yeh, retired Taiwanese evergreen singer Feng Feifei, Singapore's Edmund Chen and Kelly Poon, Malaysia's Fish Leong and even table-tennis queen Li Jiawei.
Said Ms Poa: 'Over the years, I've been approached to invest in newcomers, but I've always rejected such requests because it takes a lot of spunk, time, effort and money to do so.'
Then last year, she set eyes on Meixin at a beauty pageant she had co-organised with Lianhe Wanbao. Ms Poa said: 'Meixin has the X-factor. She has this endearing appeal that makes one take to her quite easily.
'Also, her voice is not the saccharine sweet kind - that would be too common. Meixin has this unique husky tone - think of Coco Lee - that's kind of sexy.'
Meixin eventually won the crown, as well as a contract with Ms Poa's company in October.
Said Ms Poh: 'I was 'warned' that it'd cost a bomb to groom someone with zero music background.'
After doing her sums, she went ahead.
'I don't see why I should shortchange Meixin or myself by scrimping on my 'investment'. It'd be unfair to expect her to do well if I was unwilling to spend the money.'
Meixin quit her job as a personal assistant and part-time model and has begun lessons in vocal training, guitar and keyboard. She is also brushing up her Mandarin skills.
Ms Poa spent $50,000 on a fitness trainer and grooming classes, $20,000 on styling and photography, and $250,000 on promotions, including a music video shoot in Korea. About $200,000 will go into Meixin's September-release debut album, which boasts support from Taiwanese songwriter and producer Yao Chien and Li Wei Song.
Meixin will also go to Taiwan for vocal training and will appear in two MediaCorp variety shows, On The Beat and Way To Go.
Ms Poa said she is confident about reaping returns in about two years.
'Meixin has all of what it takes - from her appearance to her demeanour.
'Add to that the right packaging, there should be no reason why she'd fail.' - Maureen Koh
