于是，我对丛林历险开始了深深的遐想。在用彩色铅笔练习一阵之后，我成功完成了自己的第一幅画作———我的《一号画作》。它是这样画的：
I pondered deeply,then,over the adventures of the jungle.And after some work with a color-ed pencil l succeeded in making my first drawing.My Drawing Number One.lt looked like this:

我将自己的大作拿给大人们看，问他们是否被这幅画吓坏了。
I showed my masterpiece to the grown-ups,and asked them whether the drawing frightened them.

而他们却答道：“吓坏了？一顶帽子怎么会把人吓坏呢？”
But they answered:"Frighten? Why should any one be frightened by a hat?"

我画的并不是帽子，而是正在消化一头大象的巨蟒。不过，既然大人看不出来，我不妨再画一幅好了：我把巨蟒肚子里的情景画了出来，以便大人们能看清楚。他们总要别人把什么事都解释得明明白白。我的《二号画作》是这样的：
My drawing was not a picture of a hat.lt was a picture of a boa constrictor digesting an ele--phant.But since the grown-ups were not able to understand it,l made another drawing:l drewthe inside of boa constrictor,so that the grown-ups could see it clearly.They always need to have things explained.My Drawing Number Two looked like this：

从此，我选择了另一种职业，学会了驾驶飞机。我几乎飞遍了世界各地，而地理学也的确派上了大用场。我一眼就能将中国和美国的亚利桑那州区别开来。如果有人夜间迷失了方向，这种知识便如同“及时雨”。
So then l chose another profession,and learned to pilot airplanes.l have flown a little over all parts of the world;and it is true that geography has been very useful to me.At a glance l can distinguish China from Arizona.lf one gets lost in the night,such knowledge is valuable.

我这一生多次遇到过很多只关心大事的人，也和大人一起生活过很长时间。我密切地、面对面地观察过他们，但这种观察并未极大改变我对他们的看法。
ln the course of this life l have had a great many encounters with a great many people who have been concerned with matters of consequence.l have lived a great deal among grown-ups.l have seen them intimately,close at hand.And that has not much improved my opinion of them.
