Ice-cold Thunder’s rally falls short in loss to Knicks
by Michael Kimball onNovember 20, 2015 at 11:26 pm
It’s onlyNovember and KD comes back soon. It’s only November and KD comes back soon. It’s only November and KD comes back soon…
Reminders like that and maybe a littleStuart Smalley-style self-affirmation may be about all Thunder fans can turn toafter another disappointing loss, this time a 93-90 setback at home to the NewYork Knicks. With a crucial season now off to a 7-6 start and the Warriorslooking invincible, it’s easy to be queasy right now in OKC.
But here’s the thing. The Thunder hadthe ball with a chance to tie the game as the clock wound down despite shooting3-29 — THREE OF TWENTY-NINE — on 3-pointers. OKC could have made it to overtimeif they had just shot a miserable 14 percent from behind the arc, or won thegame in regulation by shooting a still-awful 17 percent from deep. Or turn itaround and take one or two buckets away from the Knicks and their white-hot 60percent shooting on 3-pointers. Sometimes it’s just as simple as one team hadterrible luck, and the other didn’t.
That’s a tempting narrative to buy, especially after this game. The Thunder had their customary up-and-downdefensive performance, but they weren’t just flat outplayed by the Knicks. TheThunder had some good looks that didn’t fall, and the Knicks had some toughshots that did. And then you have randomness like Lance Freaking Thomas scoring12 points and going 2-3 on 3-pointers, plus another awful offensive night fromSerge Ibaka. Things happen.
And yet … there is theslightly-more-than-nagging feeling that something remains fundamentally offwith this squad. Despite all the changes, things feel stale. The defense is notat all coming together. After some flashes of variety early in the season, theoffense looks like it always did before Billy Donovan’s arrival. Effort isinconsistent. Kyle Singler continues to look shorn of confidence. Dion Waitersis back to being Dion Waiters more often than not. The second unit, thought ofas a strength before the season started, often struggles.
The fact is, with KD out and with only 13games gone, it’s too early to tell which of the dueling narratives will proveto be the lasting one in OKC’s 2015-16 season. Will the Thunder be more likethe Cavs last season and eventually adjust to the changes, gel as a unit andget things right in time for the playoffs? Or is this what we’re going to begetting?
It’s impossible to say. Trying to makethe case for one or the other is just venturing into #hottakes territory, andwe’re not going to go there.
But it’s certainly true that a feeling Iwould liken to constipation is as entrenched as it has ever been in the Thunderuniverse. Ever since Russell Westbrook went down with the Patrick Beverleyinjury in the 2013 playoffs, there’s just no sense that OKC has gotten a fairshake — a real shot. Serge Ibaka’s injury came the next season, and then lastseason’s injury nightmare. The fan base and the team has been pointed to thisseason as soon as it became apparent last season was a lost cause — which hasnow happened three seasons in a row, all due to an injury to a key player. Youcould feel a palpable sense of “NOW we’re back” on opening night against SanAntonio. It sure as heck felt that way during the 3-0 start to the season andthe first half of the Wizards game when KD was doing KD things and the Thunderwere choking the life out of the Washington crowd there to serenade theirhometown hero. But something always happens to stop the progress. KD’shamstring and some missed shots tonight. What tomorrow?
Maybe nothing. Maybe Kevin Durant comesback Sunday evening, the Thunder get on a roll, and November’s struggles willseem quaint while OKC and Golden State are battling it out during an epicseven-game Western Conference Finals.
But it’s hard to tell. Never as hard astonight.
        NOTES
As Mrs. Daily Thunder pointed out on Twitter, Royce goes out of town and Dion Waiters immediately is inserted into the starting lineup. This is an entertaining thing. But it wasn’t even close to one of the most important narratives of the game. Go figure.
So, the Knicks went with Jose Calderon guarding Westbrook, which made me laugh when I realized it. This was with Andre Roberson on the floor. And then Westbrook proceeded to act like it was someone other than Jose Calderon guarding him. I was certain Russ would go after Calderon early and often and force the Knicks to switch Aron Afflalo or someone onto him, but Russ let Calderon off the hook. He also floated in and out of the game defensively, often letting Calderon slide by him and try to poke the ball out from behind instead of using his considerable physical advantage to stay in front of him. I don’t get it.
Kristaps. He was barely a factor other than starting out the game with a 3-pointer. I wonder how many times in NBA history a game has been started by a made 3-pointer coming from a 7-3 player? Anyway, Kristaps Porzingis played 26 mostly uneventful minutes, but I was struck by how fluidly he moves for a guy that size. More like a small forward.
Even though I knew Sasha Vujacic was back in the league, I was still surprised to see him when he got his four-minute stint in the first half. The fact he was once engaged to Maria Sharapova is almost as inexplicable to me as the Westbrook-Calderon dynamic this game.
Lance Thomas. Cut by the Thunder last year, 12 fairly large points against them this year. Good for him. But … go away, Lance. That’s enough.
No Mitch McGary again. I’m not sure I understand it. I realize that I have spent a bunch of time talking about the missed 3-pointers, and McGary wasn’t going to be changing much about that. But with OKC clearly searching for answers and consistency, it’s hard to understand why McGary doesn’t get more of a look. He’d at least be in there moving and making things happen and bringing energy. At some point Donovan needs to see what he’s got in McGary.
Russ being Russ: Matched up against Porzingis in the corner, Russ opted to shoot a 3-pointer over the man who is a foot taller than him instead of take him to the hoop. And, of course, Russ made it.
I have no problem with Waiters taking the final shot. It was a tough look, but only tough looks were available at that point. With the way the Thunder were dropping and mishandling passes all night, it would have been plenty risky to try to force a pass. He worked to get off his shot, he got off a decent look, and it missed.
The Simon Says guy is an underrated halftime show in the world where a Zumba class is occasionally a halftime show.
        Up next: Sunday vs. Mavericks.

          Thunder win 117-114. Yay.
by Keri Young on November 22, 2015 at 9:02 pm
Okay guys, here’s the sitch. I’m watching this game while dealing with our adorable15 month old and wanting to watch the American Music Awards (Did you see CarrieUnderwood’s dress? Was that cape?). So if reading the unfiltered, completelyunorganized thoughts of a stay-at-home mom watching the Thunder game and theAMAs isn’t your thing, come back another day. But if it is are you inluck or what??? Ps sorry for the typos. They will be plentiful.
          Notes:
          KD didn’t play. Sad face.
Just fished dog food out of Harrison’s mouth.
Andre Roberson for three. Is this still a big deal or no?
Gigi Hadid. She is so pretty.
Very rarely do I use our computer. Royce is always on it and when he’s not, we want nothing to do with it. With that being said, I have tapped the computer screen more times than I can count to switch tabs since I started writing this roughly 20 minutes ago. iPad liffffffe.
Dion started and Nick was the first off the bench. DVRing this for Royce.
Ooooooooh Anthony Morrow in the game before Kyle Singler tonight. I definitely approve of this as I have just recently started following Morrow on Instagram. He videos himself while driving a lot (which is so bad people please don’t do that) but other than that it’s been a good decision.
Harrison update: I have somehow made sweeping our floor a fun game for him. Parent win.
          Russell Westbrook, good at basketball.
Y’all I’m just gonna say it…. I like the orange uniforms.
Chandler Parsons mad about missing a layup at the end of the first half. Dion’s all like, “It’s okay just keep trying.”
Who is 5 Seconds of Summer?
          Harrison update: Asleeeeeeep.
Awesome. 10-0 run by the Mavs to start the second half.
Wait, the Mavs have someone named Zaza on their team? Nice.
I saw on Twitter that Cam Payne played tonight. I must have been doing something else because I missed it. But I’m a female with typical female emotions so I need to say I’m so happy for him. Like, how exciting for him, right?
You guys, Nick Collison has 10 points. What a night!
Speaking of Mr. Collison, someone tweeted at me saying he had some great play. Does anyone know what time that was in the game? I know it was in the first half. The guy I’m married to will for sure want to see it. Thanks best friends.
PITCH PERFECT 2 WINS BEST SOUNDTRACK HOLLER
The Thunder sure know how to turn the ball over.
          Love you, Russ.
You guys know that insane energy and strength toddlers have? And how they are just relentless? Russell Westbrook never outgrew that.
Make your free throws, Mavs. They missed 12 tonight.
The best thing about this season continues to be Steven Adams’ hair.
          Thunder win117-114. Yay.
          Next up: At Utahon Monday.

              Cavs thump the Thunder, 115-92
by Royce Young onFebruary 21, 2016 at 7:22 pm
              OK, OK. I’ve gotthoughts.
And here there’sthe main one: The Thunder stunk on Sunday. In a way we’ve never really seenfrom them at home. The Cavs beat them down, embarrassing them on national TVfor the fourth-worst home loss in the OKC-era, and the worst EVER in gamesKevin Durant, Serge Ibaka and Russell Westbrook play.
The simple storyis that the Thunder gave up 63 points in the first half, came out of the lockerroom and looked like they were straightening out, cutting it to 66-62 after amonster Westbrook dunk. The Cavs, though, were the ones that rolled after that, outscoring OKC 29-11 the final eight minutes of the third quarter. Any fourthquarter comeback push was thwarted easily, as the Thunder never got closer than17. Westbrook and Durant sat the final five minutes.
So, the questionyou’re asking: How concerning is this? First, Westbrook:
“Nah, we’re notconcerned. There’s a reason why it’s rare. It doesn’t really happen. Not aconcern. We’ll be back and ready to go to Dallas.”
              And now Durant:
“We’re not goingto go home and think it’s the end of the world. We lost a game against a goodteam. We’ve got to regroup and figure out what we need to do better and moveon. It’s the regular season.”
That’s fine, andwe’ve grown to learn that the two stars of the team don’t like going oncall-out mode after losses. They prefer the perspective approach, which I cancertainly sympathize with, and stay on message.
              But. BUT.
Come on. TheThunder just don’t lose like this. And coming off Friday’s meltdown, and allthe little things that have added up over the first 56 games, it feels likethis is a culmination of something bigger. Like a brewing storm that finallyhit shore. The Thunder haven’t played well against the best teams, with aneight-point loss to the Warriors somehow being their top achievement.
Sure, it was anavalanche in the second half where the Cavs made a bunch of shots and theThunder made none, but the same story was told anyway. 63 first half points forCleveland with the Thunder basically playing a “maybe we’ll just outscore them”kind of game. The commitment on the defensive end wasn’t there, which, yeah, issomething I’m getting tired of saying too.
Durant did saythis: “We’ve got to dig down deep, man. Xs and Os, and shootarounds andschemes and practices, that shit is out the window. You’ve got to dig down deepand decide what you want to do. And that’s everybody.”
The schedule isno fun from here on out. The Thunder are 40-16, yep, and they’ve won 30 oftheir last 39, yep. Good things, things we can keep saying. But that’s alsowith a schedule that has been forgiving, with one that’s not, ahead.
“I think thesecond half of our schedule is set up with the teams we are going to play,”Billy Donovan said. “I think the more adversity our team faces I think thebetter, because I think that is the only true way to really come together, riseabove it.”
Donovan made agood point: The Thunder have a habit of watching things go wrong in a game andletting that blow them apart. They’ve done a much better job of guardingagainst that this season, to just keep playing, but today that wasn’t the case. They got taken out of the game as much by themselves as they did by the Cavs.
Like Durantsaid, they move on, because you have to. There’s bounce back opportunitiesahead, with two winnable, but potentially challenging games on the road leadinginto another showdown against the Warriors on Feb. 27. They have a chance aheadto right themselves, to put this low point behind them quickly.
Or, the holecould just get deeper.
              NOTES:
Not that this loss would’ve been any better, but this is precisely why that loss Friday to the Pacers was so bad. This was always going to be a challenging one to win.
Foye checked in late in the first. Color me a bit surprised that they’re trying to work him in. Maybe it’s just a tryout of sorts, a let’s-see-what-you-can-do kind of thing. And he didn’t do particularly much, touching the ball little. He essentially got Kyle Singler’s minutes, and did a pretty good impression.
Dion Waiters is 1-15 shooting since the All-Star break.
That moment where Waiters was about to break his drought and then he traveled before attempting what should’ve been a wide open layup.
“I’m not trying to pity Dion, but…” — Billy Donovan
Look, I don’t know what to really say about Waiters. It’s easy to forget that he was playing solid basketball as a starter leading into the All-Star break. He’s just a trainwreck right now, looking like a guy that is worried about his place, or lacking confidence, or something. I will say: He’s not dogging it on the defensive end because of it, which is why he’s still playing, but his inconsistency is a problem. And will probably continue to be.
Andre Roberson was cleared to play today, but Donovan said he held him out because… something? It was mainly about how he didn’t feel like Roberson was quite ready to see time. Which I’m not sure I get because the Thunder like to preach the message of, “If our doctors clear you, you can play.” So I guess Donovan either didn’t want him to have to test the knee against LeBron and the Cavs, or played a little doctor himself.
Hey, Steven Adams started out well, right?
Yes, you can note that the Warriors just got blitzed by the Blazers 137-105. But, they’re also 48-5. And quite clearly a team with very few questions. The Thunder have a lot they need to answer, and in the opportunities they’ve had, they haven’t done a good job of that.
The bench was just a mess again. Basically if Kanter isn’t scoring, the bench isn’t either.
I will say this: The next two weeks will be interesting to watch. For one, because there are statement games ahead to win back some confidence, but also in how the team responds. There seems to be a bit more tension lately, which is something losing can do. How they hold together and move ahead will be important.
OK, I don’t have anything else to say.
Next up: At the Mavs onWednesday
