The world's two greatest powers are competing for military dominance of the western Pacific Ocean and the contest is about to intensify. The US and China are each jockeying for advantage as they anticipate a quickening in a struggle that "has the potential to escalate into one of the deadliest conflicts of our time, if not history", according to Malaysia's Defence Minister, Hishammuddin Hussein.

Another day, another article on the SEA that conveniently failscthe mention the decades ir reclaimation and millitary build up by non-Chinese claimants in the smae area where they have no more claims to. Because it's only wrong when China does it.

      Nothing to see here

China will eventually find itself surrounded and diplomatically isolated, it's driving the region into the arms of US, not the other way around.
Unfortunately totalitarian regimes can never escape their true nature, which is exactly what the Chinese Communist Party is.

          1) US public have never been enthusiastic about interventions in Asia. The anti-Vietnam war movement is one such example.. Involvements in Europe have also been reluctantly participated- both two world wars saw US as later entry.

            2) This is resonated in the way that Trump's rhetoric has been welcome by many average Americans that FREELOADERS like Japan and Germany as well as Saudi should pay their own ways. Obama himself could see this and has now openly said as much.

Isn't it quaint that random tensions around the world since 1945 seem to favour one winner?

I would like to know why so little is been said about the reefs destruction by the Greens and environmentalists. China has committed environmental vandalism on a huge scale and not a peep. Does it only count when Australia does it, abet on a much smaller scale.

China aspires to be the No 1 super power in the World.
Example: The highly respected US News and World Report in Oct 2015 placed the Chinese university, Tsinghua University as the university with the top engineering school in the World. For a long time most of us in engineering would place MIT as the number one school without any hesitation. China can and do pour billions of dollars into its top universities.
Australia needs to learn and find a way to live with such a super power.
Australia needs to get US to build a super military base in Northern Australia. When the World degenerates into total chaos due to exponential global population explosion and global warming China and US will share the common interest to main some order in the World.
                  Commenter
                  Dr B S Goh

mtb, nations like people have 'interests', usually vested, generally they will choose the option which best suits their desires, if they're confronted by two unattractive alternatives, they'll generally take the least unattractive option, its not a conspiracy theory.
I'm always reminded of Churchill's adage, “The United States can always be relied upon to do the right thing — having first exhausted all possible alternatives.”

Dr B S Goh, you wrote - "Australia needs to learn and find a way to live with such a super power."
Correct. But it's not just Australia that needs to learn to live in peace with china, it's a universal requirement for each and every country, super-power or not. Human beings need to 'let go' of their primitive animal instincts and tune in to the 'logic' area of their brains - before it's too late.
The world doesn't have a leadership problem, it has a leadership crisis. It's all about 'who's really calling the shots'. Or more to the point, voting systems that allow such non-accountability, half-truths, whole lies and the infiltration of outsiders, hell-bent on satisfying their greed and self interest.
The focus has to be on building voting systems that ensure the candidates are quality people with track records of integrity and genuine achievement, And importantly, can be selected from the broader community, not just from two non-performing political parties who believe they have 'a God given' right to take it in turns to rule forever.
The system also must have watertight mechanisms of accountability. Or as watertight as honorable human beings can make it.
