More than 100 Nobel laureates have signed a letter urging Greenpeace to end its opposition to genetically modified organisms (GMOs). The letter asks Greenpeace to cease its efforts to block introduction of a genetically engineered strain of rice that supporters say could reduce Vitamin-A deficiencies causing blindness and death in children in the developing world.

Use of GMO seeds also prevents soil degradation and damage when Round-ready crops are used. The soil does not have to be plowed under before planting a new crop. Retilling before each planting distributes the soil as dust in the atmosphere. There many positives for GMO crops and the claim about glyophosphates being a "probable carcinogen" seems highly suspicious. Other than animal models what studies have shown a rise in cancer due to GMO crops? Have yet to see any evidence.

Greenpeace is motivated by being anti corporation. They cannot abide the fact that what farmers want to grow is produced by a profit seeking corporation that jealously protects their intellectual property via patents. If Greenpeace bothered to check they would see through a simple Google search that there are plenty of non GMO seeds available for anyone motivated to plant them. But it sticks in Greenpeace's craw that farmers all over the world vote with their wallets to plant GMO crops.

They make research tools for molecular biology the vast majority of which are used in some aspect of medical research. I'm sure that NEB is not receiving any sort of royalty from the sale of GMOs. People don't become Nobel laureates because of their lust for "Mighty Mammon" but because they are intelligent hard-working people devoted to science.

Monsanto could use GMO engineering to create corn that contains opium or caffeine or botulinum toxin or any other protein/enzyme/molecule from another type of plant animal or fungus.
1) This won't happen with traditional breeding.
2) This could be seen as desirable or profitable.
3) These GMO plant genes could escape into the wild and contaminate regular corn crops.
4) Why should the public face these risks when there are safe alternatives?
5) Because of pollination farming outdoors will unavoidably share genes.

That's not in any way inherent to GMO seeds all other traditionally bred varieties are also patented. And the golden rice and other open-source GMO projects allow replanting and modification.

说到转基因我就想到小崔和方舟子曾经就转基因是否安全这个问题上进行过争论，结果谁也没说服对方，但却使网民迅速分化成安全派和不安全派。
安全派认为转基因食品是安全，不然美国和欧盟就会让转基因食品在市场上流通，而且随着经济社会的发展，土地减少，耕地面积锐减，人口增长速度远远高于粮食单产增速。粮食安全问题会越来越严重。而转基因粮食可以快速的提高单产，解决粮食问题。
不安全派人认为转基因食品是不安全的，美国和欧洲虽然让转基因食品流通，有钱人不会买，因为有报道指出有些吃了转基因食品，生不出小孩和得各种怪病。简直是祸害下一代节奏。而且粮食安全可以通过购买，改变食谱构成通过杂交等其他无害的方法来解决。
我的观点是转基因是趋势，毕竟改变食谱可不是一朝一夕就可以的，而购买粮食如果在和平年代还可以，到了战争年代就难了。杂交发展了这么多年可能很难再高速提高单产。因此可以加大对转基因实验但要谨慎让基因粮食市面上流通。因为转基因技术还不成熟。不然国家也不会规定在市面上直接食用的转基因这么少。
最后我想说的是如果转基因食品技术成熟了那些科学家可以让绿色组织参观实验基地当场进行实验打那些绿色组织的脸，而不是通过联名写信方式要求他们不要阻止他们这么做。毕竟事实胜于雄辩。
