BELGRADE, Aug 21 - Forces of nature played an important role when AC Milan beat Red Star Belgrade in the European Cup in 1988 and went on to win the competition.
With Milan trailing 2-1 on aggregate and reduced to 10 men in the second half, a heavy fog came down on Red Star's Marakana stadium and forced a replay that Milan won on penalties.
The two teams meet on Tuesday in the second leg of their Champions league third qualifying round match and Red Star President Dragan Stojkovic believes his players must rely on their own devices to overturn a 1-0 first leg deficit this time.
"I am sure the fog won't come to our rescue tomorrow if things go wrong because that happens once in a hundred years," said Stojkovic, who scored both Red Star's goals that counted in the epic 1988 encounter.
"We want history to repeat itself reversely so that we come out on top this time and win, in highly dramatic fashion too if necessary," he told a news conference on Monday
"We have a good chance because our young team is hungrier than Milan and I am confident they can eliminate one of the best and most expensive outfits in the world."
