江苏省常熟中学原名国立第二中学,在抗日战争时期的1938年,创办于重庆合川。抗日战争胜利后,于1946年移址常熟,更名为江苏省立常熟中学。1953年定名为江苏省常熟中学。1990年通过省教委验收,确认为首批合格重点高中,1998年学校整体迁入新址,2000年被省教委确认为国家级示范性普通高中,2004年转评为江苏省四星级普通高级中学。学校是“江苏省模范学校”,“江苏省文明单位”,“江苏省德育先进学校”,已成为常熟市精神文明建设的窗口和先进文化传播的主阵地。
江苏省常熟中学明确了办学目标:把学校建成达到发达国家现代化水平的、具有鲜明办学特色的、在全国有一定影响的江苏省五星级普通高中。学校按照现代化教育的要求,确立适应现代化教育的办学思想:确立学校教育以学生发展为本,面向全体学生的思想;确立德育为核心,教学为中心,质量是根本,全面实施素质教育的思想;确立强化教师队伍建设,全心全意依靠教职员工的思想;以德立校、依法治校,以公平公正的原则处理校务。

The original name of Jiangsu Province Changshu High School was National No.2 Middle School. It was established in 1938 in Hechuan County, Sichuan Province, during the War of Resistance against Japan. In 1946, with victory achieved, the school was mobbed to Changshu County, Jiangsu Province, and was renamed Jiangsu Provincial Changshu Middle School. Its present name, Jiangsu Province Changshu High School, dates from 1953. In 1990, the Jiangsu Provincial Education Commission nominated the school as a key senior middle school and in 1998; the school was relocated to its present site in Kuncheng Road East. In 2000, the school was rewarded "Model School" and "Civilized Unit" status at the Provincial level and achieved the high distinction of being designated as a demonstration National Senior High school. With this history and with these achievements behind it, it is hardly surprising that the school should now be regarded as being in the vanguard of Changshu City's efforts to play an active part in China's national quest to fashion herself as a truly spiritual civilization.The school is keenly aware that it must make a positive contribution to the nation's response to the demands placedplaced upon modern society by the revolutions in science and technology. To this end, therefore, it aims to produce graduates of the highest quality who are well-equipped to contribute to the knowledge economy.
