Tiago Fernandes, the No2 seed and 2010 Australian Open boy's champion, demonstrated his class on Court 17 by beating Britain's Tom Farquharson 6-2, 7-5 in the first round.
The Brazilian has all the attributes of a top class player in the making as he controlled at the start, finding his rhythm early to take the first set while Farquharson still looked tight, particularly on the forehand.
Farquharson has put a lot of effort into his game since he reached the third round in 2009, and his efforts to bulk up in the gym meant that he was always competitive against Fernandes, but just lacking the ability to relax under pressure as he looked much tighter physically.
The British crowd started to get behind their player when he muscled his way to a 5-3 lead and the second set was there for the taking.
However, Fernandes began a superb fightback, breaking twice to take the match as the Brit capitulated in the heat on middle Saturday.
