Fernandes flies Brazilian flag at No.1
Australian Open champion Tiago Fernandes has become the first Brazilian to reach the top of the ITF Junior boys’ ranking since weekly rankings were introduced in 2004.
Fernandes replaces 2009 Orange Bowl champion and Roland Garros finalist Gianni Mina (FRA) at the top of the ranking and becomes the third player to hold the No.1 spot this year.
Prior to Fernandes, Brazil's highest ranked player since the introduction of weekly rankings was Nicolas Santos, who reached No.2 in December 2006 following victory in the Grade 1 Eddie Herr tournament and a run to the final of the Orange Bowl.
Tiago Fernandes represented Brazil in the 2007 World Junior Tennis Finals and the 2008 Junior Davis Cup by BNP Paribas Finals. He got to the semifinal of the grade 1 Asuncion Bowl in Paraguay in March 2009 before winning the Italian Grade 1 tournament in Santa Croce in May 2009. After reaching the quarterfinals of the 2009 US Open Junior Championships, Fernandes won his first Junior Grand Slam tournament at the 2010 Australian Open Junior Championships.
