There was another spring. Just like years before, many flowers were in full bloom. Thousands of people went sightseeing in parks.
In one of those parks, there was a huge parterre. People were crowding around the parterre, enjoying the flowers inside as usual. Everyone commended the flowers for their beauty while others paid more attention to leaves.
Actually, both flowers and leaves were quite modest, so they didn’t quarrel for humans’ opinions. However, one of these leaves were a little bit arrogant—or it’s better to say he was a dreamer and he did care about others’ evaluates. So he often said he wanted to be something more than just serving as a foil, and he also said he wanted to be something like a hero, which had more important effect than flowers. Other flowers and leaves thought it’s too ridiculous to realize, and they thought he was too arrogant as well. Nevertheless, he still held this dream, and never gave up. So sometimes he was thought as an idiot by others.
Every day was boring. The visitors were fewer and fewer because more and more people had already viewed these scenes. What’s more, as the time closed to summer, most flowers withered away. Even there were still a couple kinds of flowers; the whole parterre was no longer as colorful as it used to be.
Leaves were worried as well, especially that special leaf, because they would go away when the autumn came later.
“Life is so short that I can’t do anything meaningful!
No, no! I don’t want to spend all my life just being a common leaf!” He thought worried. Nonetheless, the only thing he could do was worriedly thinking.
Soon summer came to the end. Many of the leaves turned yellow, falling down from the plants. He felt frightened everyday because he knew he would turn yellow like others soon. One day, a woman came to this park, and walked around the parterre. That surprised everyone in the parterre because there was nobody else beside at that time. Vacant and solitary filled the whole space. The woman was depressed, staring the flowers and leaves in the parterre. Suddenly, she seemed to remember something, and then stretched out her hand and picked a leaf, which happened to be that special leaf.
He was effervescent because he thought he could realize his dream soon. Nonetheless, he felt he was too weak to be long for this world shortly after.
“Maybe they’re right; I shouldn’t have so many unrealistic notions before. I’m just a leaf; I can’t live without the tree.” He began to repent of his innocence.
When the woman arrived home, he was so weak that he thought he had only a couple minutes of life. He thought of his whole life, he thought of his unrealistic dreams, and he also thought of his friends…
At the time he was lost in thought, the woman took him into a room. When the door of the room was opened, he couldn’t believe his eyes: he saw a girl of breathtaking beauty. He had seen many people when he was in the parterre, but everyone looked common beside her. And her beauty wasn’t as seductive as flowers. She was just like leaves, just like him: pure and lovely, sending forth the most fragrant and pretty things among all the human beings. Nevertheless, the girl was sitting in a rolling chair when he saw her. She was gazing outside the window, where lots of yellow leaves lying on the ground.
The woman, the girl’s mother, called the girl’s name and gave the leaf to her. At the beginning, the girl seemed surprised at this green leaf. She stared at this leaf for quite a long time. Suddenly, smile appeared on her expressionless face.
“This smile doesn’t belong to this world, it comes from the divine world, and it comes from the angel…” He thought secretly after saw her smile.
“Thank you.” The girl said abruptly. These two words seemed to be said to her mother, and they seemed to be said to him as well.
At that moment, a thrill of horror of death went through his mind, but soon went away. He realized that his dream had become true.
The girl packed him into a nice package carefully, and put him in between the pages of her own diary. Before closing the diary, she fondled him just like fondling a cute child.
“How excellent if I can still live to watch her smiling face!” He thought out of a little bit pity.
Under her softly fondle, he gradually closed his eyes with a warm, smiling face.
