Dear classes
I would encourage all of you to watch the movie “Interstellar”. It attempts to entertain while trying to stay true to science principle. This was made possible partly because they had Kip Thorne, one of the world*s leading theoretical physicists and experts on relativity, as the executive producer and consultant for the movie.
After watching the movie, I like you to discuss with your usually group members and answer the following questions. If your answers are good, I will try , if possible, to arrange air time for the winning group to share in the lecture!
1. What are some of the scientific principles depicted in the movie?
2. Which ones are accurate physics and which ones are not? State and explain clearly.
Have fun and have a good holiday!
Mrs Toh
居然是个会看科幻片还给学生推荐科幻片的老师,这我能忍吗?不能啊!
于是,我,果断回复——
I have watched it, Mrs Toh! It was really great. It*s very different from the "space opera" (like Star Wars and Star Trek) that Americans always produce. It presents a rare science feeling. In many American science fictions (SF), inter-solar travel is way too easy. The stories happened in space, are rather the same as those political conspiracies or love stories on Earth — there is no specific importance of the GREAT distance and relativity effect in the story. In such stories, they just change the hero*s transport from cars to spaceships, and nothing more. In Interstellar, the specific features and obstacles that one would face in space travel are clearly and accurately presented.
(第一段大致的精神就是好好夸了Interstellar一番,我也确实非常喜欢这部电影)
Speaking of SF, Mrs Toh, I highly highly and sincerely recommand you to read a book named Three-Body Problem. It is the FIRST Chinese SF translated and introduced to the English world. Its Chinese name is 三体. It*s very famous in China. The original author is Liu Cixin (刘慈欣) and the translator is Ken Liu (刘宇昆, a Chinese American SF writer). Both of them were multiple winners of Nebula Award (and Liu Cixin was the winner of many years* Galaxy Award of Science Fiction of China). Actually it is a trilogy called Three-Body Trilogy, and Three-Body Problem is the first book of the series. Luckly this book has just been finished translating and published on 11th Nov (it*s available on Amazon now :)
