Years of incarcerations, secrets and deceits, along with never-ending conflicts and violence between M's and G's people, had taken their toll on M. As fierce fighting continued without, unceasing wars waged within M. M was emotionally, mentally, and physically drained. G noticed that M's ideology and behaviors aligned less and less with those of his people and of H. M started to appear odd among them. G sensed that M's days with S were coming to an end.

One day, a dejected M spoke to G about quitting. Sensing the weariness, heaviness, and depression deep down M's heart, G brought M across the border into G's country, and provided M with a hotel room and a rental car. He told M to enjoy a nice vacation, relax and not to think about work. G did this not as a handler to his source, but as a human being to another human being.

Upon learning what G had done, S was furious because G had broken yet more protocols. S reprimanded G and took him to court. It eventually fired G.
G went to see M. He bit M a simple good-bye and left. M was shell-shocked. He could not believe that G was completely out of his life and that he was never going to see G again!

A new handler was assigned to M but there was no trust between M and his new handler. The handler wanted M to take a polygraph test. M was flabbergasted! This was the last straw; M was through with S and wanted out!

M expressed to S his desire of quitting S; he also requested S' approval to leave the region and travel to U.S. S would not give M its permission on those requests. Instead, S offered M an all-expenses-paid, up to one year, vacation in Europe. And, as an incentive, it encouraged M to open a big communication company in M's home territory, with all needed fund provided by S. But no U.S., no quitting. M would not budge. He yearned to be in a free environment, away from all the chaos, fighting and conflicts, so that he could sort through his life, his mind. Hence, a tug of war between M and S began - S insisted on M's staying as M insisted on leaving.

Finally, three months after M "quit", S gave in. It would allow M to leave the region for U.S. only on medical reason(s). In 2007, leaving behind all power, position, and wealth, M boarded a plane to U.S. S only agreed to let M "vacation" in U.S. for a few months. It wanted M to return afterwards and continued working for S. But M had other plans.

M wanted the breaking news of his religious conversion to come from the enemy, not from the West. He was fully aware of how much this news would devastate his family.

His father, still in prison, woke up to this world-shattering news. The thought of his son being damned, and the eternal separation between his son and him pained the father’s heart immensely. He cried and would not leave his cell. Yet he clung onto that final thin thread of hope - maybe the news was fabricated. A few days later, M's father received confirmation from M's sister that the news was, in fact, true. He wailed hard and uncontrollably. Prisoners from other factions came to console him but he was inconsolable. They wept with him. Witnessing the tremendous anguish and sorrow of M's father, the enemy prison guards broke out in tears.

M had assumed the role of a father figure to his younger siblings during his father's confinements, and always had solutions to their problems. But this time, he could not provide any answer to resolve their problem, because he was the problem.

A few months later, some prisoners smuggled cell phones into the prison. M called and talked to his father. Although still sick at heart, M's father told him that M would always be his son, and that he loved M and would protect him. M's father urged him to return home, but M declined.

The next day, M called his father again. M had something very important to tell him, and did not want his father to learn it from media. M told his father that he had spied for S for a decade, and that his father was still alive because, being on the top of the enemy's assassination list, M had agreed to put his father in prison in order to protect him.

Collaborating with the enemy had always been seen as a great shame upon the collaborator and the family. The shame was so profound that, in M's culture, it was regarded much worse than raping one's own mother. M asked his father to disown him. Only by renouncing the relationship could his parents and younger siblings be safe. His request was met with deafening silence.

M had secretly applied for political asylum almost as soon as he arrived in U.S. But his petition was rejected in 2009, and the government had initiated the deportation proceedings. Jobless, moneyless, on the brink of being homeless, living on the generosity of his friends from church, and facing deportation, M decided to go public with his story.

On February 24, 2010, another headline appeared on the enemy's media outlets. The world learned that M, the son of H ‘s top leader and the heir apparent, had worked for S for 10 years as a spy. The breaking news soon followed by the release of M's memoir.

Sitting at his home and reading the newspaper, G could hardly believe his eyes. Across the front page of the newspaper was the story of M’s decade-long collaboration with S. The news article also shed light on M's dire situation in U.S. G knew what it would mean for M if M got deported; M was subject to two death penalty imposed by his own people - one for spying for S, and the other one for converting to Christianity. Heart racing, G couldn’t fathom how on earth M had gotten himself into such plight. But G couldn't just sit idly by.
